When you are a business owner, of course it comes with challenges, never enough hours in the day, everyone wanting something from you - all.the.things. Managing your time can end up being one of the most important aspects. Sometimes it feels overwhelming as you are pulled in so many directions, juggling all the responsibilities, but what if you embraced it. Managing employees, meeting deadlines, handling finances not to mention actually doing the work in your business, whether it be installing products, producing products, providing the service your business is known for - take some time to think how far you've come, how brilliant you actually are at managing all of this and give yourself a pat on the back. Then have a think, how can I manage this better, enjoy it, make the most of my time each day.
Being a business owner is no walk in the park. Juggling multiple responsibilities, managing employees, meeting deadlines, handling finances, and dealing with unexpected challenges can often leave you feeling overwhelmed and pulled in many directions. However, by changing your mindset and reframing your perception of busyness, you can turn it around and think of it as something to actually be grateful for. Imagine if you weren't busy.....Did you know, you can re-frame being busy, you could even create a time management quadrant to better manage you time. And it's more simple than it sounds.
Shift your Mindset
Instead of viewing busyness as a burden, consider it as a privilege. When you stop and recognise that being busy means you have opportunities and responsibilities that others may not have, it puts things into perspective. Shifting your mindset allows you to appreciate the abundance of your endeavors and the impact you're making through your business.
Instead of automatically associating busyness with stress and exhaustion, we can choose to redefine it as a reflection of our active engagement with life. Busy periods indicate that we are actively pursuing our goals, contributing to our communities, and embracing opportunities. This shift allows us to view busyness not as an inconvenience, but as a meaningful part of our journey. This kind of thinking tricks our mind also to keep going. When you are getting tired, take a break then keep going again when you are ready, because every little step we get through gets us closer to our goals while enjoying the journey on the way. And remember we can each only do so much every day. Celebrate your To Done List NOT your To Do List - because realistically that is never ending 😉
Remember your WHY
Take a step back and reflect on the reasons why you chose to become a business owner. Remind yourself of the goals you're working towards and the impact you're making on your customers, employees, family and community. Try to look at yourself through your children's eyes. They may be too small to understand but they will be taking it all in unconsciously, your hard work ethic your stamina and your success - whatever that looks like at the moment. And your parents well they get to be proud of you no matter what - but I bet they are secretly saying "Yes I created that business owner!!"
Remembering the bigger picture can help you find purpose and fulfillment even amidst the busyness.
Being Busy is a GREAT sign
Acknowledge that being busy is a great sign. Turn it around and imagine if your business was not busy! Being busy means that your business is growing and evolving, and if not thriving just yet, well it's not far away, just do not give up! Embrace any challenges, because being in business does mean challenges but also reframe these challenges as opportunities for personal and professional development. The old saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" means each challenge you go through you get tougher and learn a better way to do things or to react to things coming up day to day. By reframing busyness as another step towards your dreams, and by being grateful, you can approach each task with enthusiasm and determination, knowing you are learning, growing, evolving, and expect to be thriving in no time!
The Time Management Quadrant (fancy words for: important stuff first)
One way of effectively managing your time and ensuring you're focusing on the right priorities is to create a time management quadrant. This also gives you peace of mind and relief from stress and the "busyness" because you are creating a plan, not having a million things running around in your head that you are trying to remember. Divide a sheet of paper into four sections, each representing a different category of tasks, plans, or work that you have lined up - (all the stuff running around in your head)
✨ Important and Urgent: Tasks that require immediate attention and are crucial for your business's success. Allocate specific time slots for these tasks and tackle them head-on.
✨ Important but Not Urgent: Tasks that contribute to your long-term goals and require thoughtful planning. Dedicate regular time to these tasks, ensuring they receive the attention they deserve.
✨ Urgent but Not Important: Tasks that demand immediate action but don't align with your long-term objectives. Delegate or eliminate these tasks whenever possible to free up time for more significant responsibilities.
✨ Not Important and Not Urgent: Tasks that provide little value or are distractions. Minimise or eliminate these tasks to make room for more meaningful activities.
By categorising your tasks within the time management quadrant, you can prioritise effectively and focus your energy on the areas that truly matter.
Recognise and be mindful that you can't do everything on your own, and that's ok. Delegate tasks to competent team members who can handle them efficiently, freeing up your time for what matters. Also, leverage technology (there's an AI for that) and automation to streamline repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on more critical aspects of your business.
As a business owner, it's natural to feel overwhelmed by the myriad of responsibilities and tasks pulling you in different directions. However, by reframing your mindset and embracing the busyness, you can find gratitude, purpose, and a sense of fulfillment in the chaos. Take the "time" to create a time management quadrant to prioritise your tasks effectively, delegate where possible, and automate repetitive processes. Remember, being busy signifies growth and opportunity. Embrace and enjoy your business journey and never ever stop dreaming.
